Certainly she's not in my Pantheon, but I can't deny she is sometimes riveting.Maury D'annatohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14136129943169313348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-8268583726234263782008-06-10T20:59:00.000-05:002008-06-10T20:59:00.000-05:00Anonymous soprano, You are not alone to bemoan LuP...Anonymous soprano, You are not alone to bemoan LuPone.

I still think the best point in her career was playing that damn tuba in Sweeney Todd, because it ensured that while she played, she was mechanically unable to sing.

I, as a homosexual, fear losing my gay card, because not only can I not stand LuPone (whose idea of pitch is something akin to darts), but I have an abiding distaste for Bernadette Peters (whose idea of timbre is something akin to Fran Drescher). In truth, I think Patti acts well when she plays big and Bernadette acts well when she plays small. But when they open their mouths to sing, I want to chew on a cyanide capsule while drinking hemlock. I pray to the gay goddess Judy that my adoration of Ethel Merman reactivates my gay card.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-22559581603496679102008-06-05T16:14:00.000-05:002008-06-05T16:14:00.000-05:00I think I am not allowed to say this without the r...I think I am not allowed to say this without the requisite lynching following, but, uh, I kind of dislike Patty Lupone.

IMNSHO, there is a certain amount of "it's all about ME" to everyone of her performances. The show may change, the character name changes, but her performance stays essentially the same.

It's not a BAD performance, granted, but it's always "Patty Lupone IS So-and-So" instead of "Featuring PL in the role of So-and-So" if that makes sense.

And you know, sometimes it works quite well. A lot of the characters she plays are, well, a lot like her performance. But when it comes to a subtle performance where God is in the details, that's where she really fails.

Others' mileage may vary, of course.La Cowntessahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11373178747064421890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-25110781846979316212008-06-05T14:29:00.000-05:002008-06-05T14:29:00.000-05:00I think you are required to call her "Oscar Winner...I think you are required to call her "Oscar Winner Marisa Tomei" at all times.Grrghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03411931791000663919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-60073623620907233982008-06-05T14:09:00.000-05:002008-06-05T14:09:00.000-05:00I have any say in the matter, please refrain from ...I have any say in the matter, please refrain from In the Heights.
