Might not be ideal Podles terrain anymore. If anyone had had the sense to ask her to sing it, and a dozen other things, ten years ago...(I mean come on, who sings her first Eboli at 50ish?)Maury D'annatohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14136129943169313348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-12755705112770477482007-04-24T09:46:00.000-05:002007-04-24T09:46:00.000-05:00ok i have to go put on Elektra now cuz I can't get...ok i have to go put on Elektra now cuz I can't get that last waltz out of my head -- only Strauss could make a waltz bloodyChalkenteroshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08435851223758000117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-83901265721737268702007-04-23T15:37:00.000-05:002007-04-23T15:37:00.000-05:00Chrysothemis was the one role where Deborah Voigt'...Chrysothemis was the one role where Deborah Voigt's girth really bothered me. On a night when Dame Gwyneth and Rysanek were not just singing like goddesses but were so physically involved, it was laughable to see Debbie waddling about the set, especially at the end as she lumbered up the stairs to pound on the doors.

I saw her do it five or six times times with various co-stars and she ruined the ending every time.

Now that she's traded in her vocal stability for a slimmer figure I wouldn't want to HEAR her in the part. The voice has lost all its gleam. Which, in truth, has been wearing off anyway over the years.

I've never forgotten that first Ariadne in Boston...what a revelation her voice was then.Oberonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04584910896395000762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-12443523627270931232007-04-23T14:31:00.000-05:002007-04-23T14:31:00.000-05:00Sorry, NOT Aix but Orange--also south of France, o...Sorry, NOT Aix but Orange--also south of France, of course.Willhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14279473113628377106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-40086643788475568572007-04-23T14:30:00.000-05:002007-04-23T14:30:00.000-05:00If you can find it, there's a terrific video from ...If you can find it, there's a terrific video from Aix-en-Provence with Gweneth Jones and Rysanek--very,very good stuff. Klytamnesra is a kind of glamorous society type here, fallen on hard times (too many pills, surely) and the magic stones she wears are all the diamonds in her bracelets. The woman was fearless and, to quote a saying about another very strong woman I know "may have been wrong but was NEVER in doubt."Willhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14279473113628377106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17999907.post-24159800323487368722007-04-23T11:53:00.000-05:002007-04-23T11:53:00.000-05:00Maury, this is why we love you all so much. :)"Ah,...Maury, this is why we love you all so much. :)

"Ah, Strauss. It's like a good piece of steak. There's blood inside."

This is also a comment that makes one love Ms. Podles even more. Do you think she'd do Amme? Would it not be incredibly hot?

As for the sets, my ideal Elektra would probably have just the suggestion of the house, except you do need a door for Chrysothemis to beat on and scream at the end. Oh, Hugo, tacking on that Aeschylean ending--full of love.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
