Really there's hardly anything better than that kind of surprise: a singer or two you don't particularly care about cranking out something riveting. I have always found Gruberova's voice hard on the ear and Baltsa I just never gave much thought to (her O Dawn Fatale takes things juuuust around the bend.) But check this:

Amazing. I also have never been particularly taken with either singer, but... Whoa.
I admire Grubrova much more than I actually like the voice. And while I like Balsta, I find that she's always trying to sound big. This clip is sensational from both ladies.
FYI: Virginia Zeani is very much alive and well and teaching! I had lunch with her the day before yesterday, so you might want to verify your info. before posting!

PS: At age 83 she still is totally gorgeous, and she still can split the air to shame a Macaw! Voice intact; knees hurt!
