Oh great

Is it all this good? Am I going to have to go through something on the scale of my Gencerjahr, skulking about in the dark corners of record stores looking for her single pirated aircheck of Praskovija di Broad Channel? Oh, Raina, my as-of-eight-minutes-ago Bulgar enchantress!

I have her only in a mid-80s Falstaff on DVD, where you could say Giuseppe Taddei and Christa Ludwig run right over her. She's a completely ordinary Alice Ford.

When I was all of 20 years old (and not to developed in my tastes) I saw her in the title role of Donizzeti's Fausta in Rome (in 1981). She had loads of presence. I remember that. She is great. I love her now. A lot.

Kabaivanska never really plumbed the Donizetti canon the way Gencer did but I think she's quite wonderful in the central Verdi and Puccini repertory.

i think I just named your writing style:
you are the Sedated, Austic Kathy Griffin of Opera.

I'm still working on this, so I will possibly refine this.

er, that was Autistic

Lisa: I've never gotten the role of Alice Ford. Like I don't know what makes an Alice anything but dull.

Gabriella Tucci made Alice Ford sparkling and delightful, at least for me.

I heard Raina only once in live performance--La Forza del Destino at the MET in 1964 opposite Bergonzi. I remember her as being impressive as Leonore. She wasn't the heavy artillery kind of Leonore but she had the role in hand and was very nicely balanced with Carlo.

maury,
just a tangent. I was drunk. I'll keep working on it!

oh snap! my captcha was "GRATING" - I'll take that as a hint! (gulp)

I find Maury's writing neither sedated nor autistic. He's literate, articulate and interesting in print.

On the other hand, I have no idea what a captcha is.
