None of these people could have been so present as to say all the clever things ascribed to them, Mary Garden and her dress*, etc. as we were discussing in the bar at the Algonquin. (Really.) The Napkins there have the rhymed poem version of the "a couple more drinks and I'd have been under the host" remark, which I've always found much less funny than the plain old remark version.
*someone or other asked Madame Garden what was holding up her rather revealing dress. She's said to have responded, presumably without missing a beat, "Your age and my discretion."
