It may be like this around here for a little while

The first stroke of rhetorical genius in this season's campaigns is a musical one.

I don't quite get it. Are we actually electing a new high priestess or a president who has concrete ideas and plans?

Wait. I think I'll rewrite that. This video is two things...what are those, Maury? Well, first of all, it's a piece of music. Schubert or Cole Porter it ain't, but it's catchy and makes nice use of the documentary technique Steve Reich uses in Different Trains and some other works. Second of all, it's a campaign ad, a little piece of propaganda. It's neither more nor less substantial than most, I suppose. It doesn't have a fellow with a low voice saying "tough on crime," and citing one carefully chosen statistic. I find it refreshing and populist without pandering.
I am optimistic that nobody reading here thinks I'm such a moron that I'm pro Obama because "OMG music videoz!" or because Scarlet Johannsen likes him. It's just an ad (I'm not even sure it's that--it doesn't seem to have been created by his campaign) and as such, I think it's great.

well, that explains it much better. I thought you wanted Obama to play Sarastro in a new production in DC. Is he a bass, though?

tannegrin: oh I hate the Magic Flute. Maybe he can sing something more fun like Ferrando or Guiglelmo, whichever's the baritone. (I mix those boys up, but then so do their lady friends.) I mean from the speaking voice mightn't you guess baritone?
